UN Condemns Benue Killings, Urges Justice as President Tinubu Plans Peace Mission

The United Nations has condemned the recent wave of violence in Yelewata village, Benue State, North Central Nigeria, which left dozens of civilians dead and many others displaced. According to multiple reports, the brutal attacks occurred while many victims were asleep, sparking national and international outrage.

In a statement from UN Headquarters, Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the killings, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. His Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said the UN is closely monitoring the situation:

“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended.”

President Tinubu Responds: Urges Peace, Plans State Visit

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also condemned the attacks and the ongoing violence in Benue State. He called on all leaders and residents to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding amid the region’s growing insecurity.

In a bid to address the long-standing communal and herder-farmer conflicts in the area, President Tinubu will visit Benue State on Wednesday. During his visit, he is expected to meet with:

Traditional rulers

Political leaders

Religious figures

Community heads

Youth groups

The goal is to foster dialogue and develop lasting solutions to the persistent hostilities affecting local communities.

President Tinubu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and those displaced by the violence.

Why Benue State Remains a Flashpoint

Benue State has long suffered from deadly clashes between farming communities and herders, fueled by competition over land, dwindling natural resources, and ethnic tensions. The latest attacks in Yelewata highlight the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian, security, and development efforts.
