Charly Boy Reveals Origin of “Charly Boy Bus Stop” in Gbagada Before Recent Renaming

Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has shed light on the origins of the iconic “Charly Boy Bus Stop” in Gbagada, Lagos. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Charly Boy recounted how the bus stop came to be named after him due to his contributions to the community in the early 1990s.

The bus stop, which became a landmark in the bustling Gbagada area, was recently renamed by the Bariga Local Council Development Area in honor of award-winning indigenous rapper and music executive, Olamide. But the original name had deep roots in community impact and grassroots appreciation.

Why the Bus Stop Was Named After Charly Boy

Charly Boy explained that his close ties with the Gbagada community and his benevolent efforts led residents to name the bus stop after him, a move that reflected the people's appreciation for his impact.

“Once upon a time, I used to live at the bus stop,” he said, recounting how the name came about.

“People who were in Gbagada at the time felt it was just right to name a bus stop after me because of how I contributed to that community. The military, pensioners, okada riders, they all benefited from me in one way or another.”

A Legacy of Service

Charly Boy noted that he had quietly supported various individuals and groups within the community, including offering scholarships, financial assistance, and aid to the vulnerable.

“I don’t like talking about what I’ve done, but I tried for my community. Because of those efforts, they chose to honor me by naming the bus stop after me.”

The bus stop eventually became one of Gbagada’s most recognizable landmarks, referenced by locals and commuters alike.

A New Name, A New Era

In recent weeks, the bus stop formerly known as Charly Boy Bus Stop was officially renamed in honor of Olamide, another son of the soil who has made significant strides in Nigeria’s music industry. The renaming has sparked conversations about legacy, cultural memory, and the role of public figures in shaping local identity.

While Charly Boy has gracefully acknowledged the name change, his legacy as a community builder and activist continues to resonate with many Nigerians, especially those who witnessed his impact firsthand in Gbagada.
