Atiku’s 2027 Presidential Ambition May Break ADC Coalition as Obi, El-Rufai Mull Exit

There is growing tension within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s reported plan to contest the 2027 presidential election sparks internal divisions. Prominent figures in the opposition alliance including Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai are said to be reconsidering their involvement over Atiku's perceived dominance in the party’s internal politics.

According to Naija News, insiders within the ADC have raised alarm that Atiku’s push to secure the party’s presidential ticket could derail the coalition’s chances of making a significant impact in the 2027 general elections. Several founding promoters of the alliance, including El-Rufai, are reportedly developing "cold feet" due to rising disagreements.

A top member of the ADC’s interim management committee, who spoke anonymously to BusinessDay, expressed concerns over Atiku’s ambition, warning that it might weaken the unity and purpose of the coalition.

“Yes, everybody is enthusiastic about the new coalition and the opportunity it presents to Nigerians ahead of 2027, but the plans by Atiku Abubakar to contest may ruin our chances,” the source stated.

He emphasized that while the party is committed to providing a level playing field for all aspirants, Atiku’s involvement could create internal fractures unless he steps down.

El-Rufai and the Southern Presidency Agenda

El-Rufai, who played a pivotal role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu in 2023, has consistently pushed for power to remain in the South until at least 2031. His unwavering stance could put him at odds with Atiku’s ambitions. Though it remains unclear who El-Rufai will support, southern contenders like Peter Obi and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, have already signaled interest in the 2027 race.

The deepening cracks in the ADC coalition may threaten its ability to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the next election.

As internal negotiations and alignments continue, the ADC’s ability to retain major political actors like Obi and El-Rufai could determine whether it becomes a serious contender in 2027 or just another fractured opposition alliance.
