More and more young people who once identified as transgender are now stepping forward with a painful message: don’t make the same mistake.
One of the most outspoken voices is 18-year-old Chloe Cole, who calls herself a “former trans kid.” After years of puberty blockers and an irreversible double mastectomy at just 15, Chloe de-transitioned—and now dedicates her life to warning others.
“We need to stop telling children that puberty is optional or that they were born wrong. My childhood was ruined, and so were thousands of others I know. This needs to stop,” Chloe said.
In her book Detrans: True Stories of Escaping the Gender Ideology Cult, journalist Mary Margaret Olohan documents the stories of de-transitioners—many of whom were promised happiness through “gender-affirming care,” only to find regret, scars, and lingering mental health struggles.
She argues that what’s marketed as compassionate healthcare is often puberty blockers, hormones, and life-altering surgeries—with little understanding of the irreversible consequences.
“Some girls went in for double mastectomies without realizing breasts don’t grow back. What they’re left with are deep, dark scars and more pain than before,” Olohan said.
Many de-transitioners describe a moment of awakening: “The doctors told me I’d be better. But I wasn’t. I still had the same mental health issues—and worse, I had lost body parts I can never get back.”
Parents, too, often face immense pressure from doctors, Olohan notes. They’re given heartbreaking ultimatums like: “Would you rather have a dead daughter or a living son?” Out of fear, many consent—only to later feel betrayed by the medical system.
Chloe and others say speaking out brings more backlash. While transitioning is widely praised, those who reverse it are often rejected, called “traitors,” or told they were never truly transgender.
Despite the hostility, their voices are making an impact. Chloe’s testimony before Congress has already influenced laws across the U.S., with half of all states now banning gender surgeries and puberty blockers for minors.
Her warning is stark:
“Enough children have been victimized by this barbaric pseudo-science. Please let me be your final warning.”
