Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦90,000 for civil and public servants in the state, with immediate effect.
The announcement came after the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the New Government House in Abakaliki.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh, the government said the decision was part of Governor Nwifuru’s “People’s Charter of Needs Agenda,” which prioritises the welfare of workers.
The new wage represents a ₦20,000 increase from the previous ₦70,000 minimum wage.
Beyond wage increases, the state also approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovative Centre, designed to strengthen the state’s capacity for viral disease research, diagnosis, surveillance, and training in line with public health needs and global advancements.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma also announced an upward review of the minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦104,000 following a meeting with labour leaders in Owerri.
These developments come a year after President Bola Tinubu signed the new National Minimum Wage Bill into law in July 2024, raising the benchmark from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 after months of negotiations with labour unions and other stakeholders.
Since then, several states have moved beyond the national threshold, tailoring wages to local realities and worker demands.
