2027 Elections: ‘Peter Obi and Atiku’s Merger Cannot Defeat Tinubu’ – Bayo Onanuga Declares

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, political alliances are beginning to take shape. However, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has confidently stated that no opposition merger, including that of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, poses any threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV’s 'Prime Time' on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Onanuga addressed recent speculations surrounding a potential coalition between the Labour Party’s Peter Obi and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)'s Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Tinubu’s Track Record Will Speak for Him – Onanuga

Onanuga insisted that President Tinubu’s performance and achievements will secure his re-election, asserting that:

“If you merge Peter Obi and Atiku together, there is no way the two of them can beat a Bola Tinubu and Shettima ticket. It is going to be impossible.”

He dismissed the opposition’s coalition talks as premature, adding,

“They are jumping the gun; it is not yet time for politicking.”

The presidential aide reiterated that the APC is not threatened by any alliance, stating that the party remains focused on governance and delivering on its promises.

Tinubu's Role in Buhari's 2015 Victory Highlighted

In a related development, Onanuga, via his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, reminded Nigerians of President Tinubu’s pivotal role in the 2015 victory of Muhammadu Buhari, stressing his strategic political weight.

“Tinubu ensured that Buhari clinched the APC presidential ticket by overcoming strong challengers like Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso. But more critically, he gave Buhari what he had always lacked—geographical spread and additional votes from the South-West.”

He noted that while Buhari had a solid voter base in the North, it was Tinubu’s political influence in the South-West that helped secure a nationwide victory.

What This Means for 2027

With Tinubu’s camp already exuding confidence ahead of 2027, questions are being raised about whether a coalition between Atiku and Obi can truly present a formidable challenge. Onanuga’s statements suggest the APC is prepared and optimistic that Tinubu remains the candidate to beat, regardless of the opposition’s plans.

📌 What are your thoughts? Can a Peter Obi and Atiku merger change the game in 2027—or is Tinubu truly unstoppable?
