In a shocking development, police operatives in Ogun State have arrested a man who successfully posed as a lawyer for almost ten years before finally being exposed.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Odeh, had been parading himself as a legal practitioner and even handled cases in Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun State under the false identity “A.O. Emmanuel, Legal Practitioner and Public Consultant.”
According to a statement released on Saturday, August 30, by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ade Ogunyemi, Odeh’s cover was blown on Thursday, August 28, when he appeared at a court in Abeokuta to represent an unsuspecting client.
He was immediately apprehended by operatives of the X-Squad Section, led by ACP Akinloye Oyegade.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone XI, Osogbo, Emuobo Ekokotu, condemned the act, warning Nigerians to verify the authenticity of lawyers before engaging them.
“This incident should serve as a strong warning to those who parade themselves as lawyers to defraud innocent citizens. The law will always catch up with impostors,” the AIG stated.
He further explained that hiring a fake lawyer could result in financial loss, weak representation in court, compromised cases, and reputational damage.
Authorities confirmed that Odeh will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
The shocking case has sparked public concern, with many Nigerians calling for stricter vetting processes to prevent impostors from infiltrating the legal profession.
