Tinubu Launches Bold Nationwide Initiative to Tackle Poverty and Boost Rural Development

In a major stride toward eradicating poverty and building a stronger, more inclusive economy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP) a transformative grassroots initiative aimed at uplifting millions of Nigerians across all 8,809 political wards.

The programme was adopted during the 150th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the State House, Abuja, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable development.

A Cornerstone of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

The RHWDP is a critical component of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which targets achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030. This new initiative is designed to directly address key developmental challenges at the community level, with targeted interventions in:

Poverty alleviation

Food security

Infrastructure development

Energy access

Job creation

According to the plan, each ward will host between 1,000 to 2,000 economic activities, depending on population and size, making it one of Nigeria’s most ambitious grassroots development strategies to date.

Tinubu: "Let’s Change the Story of Rural Nigeria"

While addressing governors at the NEC meeting, President Tinubu emphasized the need for urgent, inclusive action to improve living conditions at the grassroots.

“Let us change the story of our people in the rural areas,” he said. “The economy is working. We are on the path of recovery, but we need to stimulate growth in the rural areas.”

Strategic Implementation and Oversight

The programme will be overseen by a National Steering Committee, with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning serving as the coordinating secretariat.

Minister Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who presented the initiative to the Council, noted that the RHWDP will require collaboration across all three tiers of government federal, state, and local to ensure its success.

To support smooth execution, President Tinubu also:

Relocated the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation to the Presidency for closer coordination.

Expanded the national school feeding programme to drive up school enrolment and reduce child poverty.

Why It Matters

The Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme has the potential to reshape the rural economy, improve livelihoods, and create jobs at scale. With focused attention on underdeveloped areas, the initiative lays the groundwork for a bottom-up approach to national growth, ensuring that no community is left behind.
