Deadline Approaches: NMA Set to Down Tools Over Controversial Circular
As the July 23 deadline draws closer, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening to shut down medical services nationwide if critical demands are not addressed.
According to NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, the ultimatum was issued following a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which allegedly violated earlier agreements on the remuneration of medical and dental officers in the federal public service.
Why the NMA Is Taking a Stand
The NMA describes the circular as “discriminatory and damaging” to the welfare of Nigerian medical professionals. According to Prof. Audu:
“We have rejected that circular outright. We expect that any new directive affecting our members should be the outcome of mutual consultation, not something imposed.”
The association argues that the revised allowances in the circular undermine the efforts of frontline health workers and pose a threat to the already fragile healthcare system in Nigeria.
Government Response & Pending Talks
Despite holding initial meetings with government officials including the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and other top figures no concrete resolutions have been reached.
A follow-up meeting was postponed due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but the NMA is urging the government to reschedule immediately to avoid crippling industrial action.
Prof. Audu emphasized:
“Unless the government reconvenes a meeting in the coming days, we may be forced to proceed with a strike.”
Katsina NMA Branch Joins the Chorus of Rejection
The Katsina State chapter of the NMA has also strongly opposed the NSIWC circular in a communique signed by Dr. Muhammadu Sani and Dr. Yahya Salisu. They called for urgent withdrawal of the circular and warned that uninterrupted health services could no longer be guaranteed.
