The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a region-wide sit-at-home on May 30, 2025, to commemorate Biafran heroes and victims of the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War. This annual event, termed Biafra Heroes Memorial Day, aims to honor those who lost their lives fighting for Biafra’s independence. Here’s a breakdown of the key details and implications.

Why May 30?

May 30 holds historical significance as a day of remembrance for Biafrans. IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful stated the sit-at-home serves to:

- Honor fallen heroes like Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Gen. Phillip Efiong.

- Reflect on the genocide and marginalization faced by the Igbo community since the war.

- Advocate for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, detained by Nigerian authorities.

Lockdown Guidelines: Who Is Affected?

The sit-at-home will enforce a total lockdown across Southeast and South-South Nigeria from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Key directives include:

- Closure of schools, markets, and religious institutions.

- No public gatherings (community meetings, protests, or events).

- Essential workers exempted: Doctors, nurses, journalists, firefighters, and fuel station staff may operate.

IPOB has urged families to stay indoors, share stories of the war, and reflect on Biafra’s struggle.

Coordination with WAEC and Regional Governors
To minimize disruptions, IPOB has:

- Alerted the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to reschedule exams on May 30.

- Notified Southeast/South-South governors about the lockdown, emphasizing its peaceful intent.

Global Commemoration Activities

While the sit-at-home applies within Nigeria, Biafrans abroad will:

- Hold street demonstrations (with permits) in host countries.

- Organize town hall meetings to discuss Biafra’s history and ongoing marginalization.

Safety Measures: No Protests in Nigeria

IPOB has banned protests within Nigeria to avoid clashes with security forces. Instead, they encourage symbolic gestures like:

- Displaying Biafra flags.

- Sharing educational content online.

Historical Context: The Biafra-Nigeria War
The 1967–1970 civil war, sparked by ethnic tensions and resource control disputes, led to an estimated 1–3 million Biafran deaths. IPOB’s annual memorial highlights unresolved grievances, including:

- Economic marginalization of Igbo communities
.
- Calls for a referendum on Biafran independence.

Final Thoughts

The May 30 sit-at-home underscores IPOB’s push for recognition of Biafra’s history and self-determination. While the lockdown may disrupt daily life, IPOB frames it as a peaceful act of remembrance. Residents are advised to comply with guidelines to ensure safety and honor the sacrifices of Biafra’s heroes.
