A 19-year-old Scottish footballer, Niall Geany, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in jail after being found guilty of r@ping a woman who offered him kindness.

The incident happened on March 3, 2024, when the victim — described as a Good Samaritan — invited Geany into her home to charge his phone after a night out.

According to court reports, Geany, who had shared a taxi with the woman, found himself stranded near her house. Despite showing no romantic interest in him, she decided to help.

However, the footballer betrayed that trust and forced himself on her after she repeatedly told him “No.” The assault left the victim injured and traumatized, with witnesses later describing her as “visibly distressed.”

At the High Court in Glasgow, Judge Alistair Watson condemned Geany’s actions, saying:

“She allowed you into her home and placed trust in you that night. You clearly committed the crime of r@pe. The degree of harm you caused is particularly high.”

The judge acknowledged Geany’s youth and “low risk of reoffending,” noting that he could still be rehabilitated, which led to a reduced sentence.

Geany, who most recently played for The Spartans FC in Edinburgh, will serve part of his sentence in a young offenders’ institute before being transferred to prison.

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and issued with a non-harassment order preventing any contact with the victim.

When the sentence was announced, an emotional voice from the public gallery reportedly shouted, “Yes.”
